#SherpaStories – Are you brave enough for Sherpa Harsha’s tour?
Once, in a time before time, God breathed life into the universe. He created the elements and these elements went about their business. The light created the angles, the earth gave birth to man, and the fire created the Djinn. The Djinn, because of his intense power was condemned to dwell, trapped between the two worlds.
If you wake up the Djinn, you are granted three wishes. You could ask for strength like the hulk, beauty like Aphrodite, telekinesis like Jean Grey or just same ol’ Wolf of the Wall Street kind of money. But remember, upon being granted the third wish, the unholy legions of the Djinn will be freed to rule the planet.
Fear is all there will be then, FEAR OF THE DJINN.
Forget Barbara Eden, Forget Robin Williams. Djinns in Firoz Shah Kotla are far from funny and friendly. They are the face of fear, the agents of destruction, the evil waiting to be set free. So, are you brave enough to tickle the sleeping giants?
If yes, read on.
Let us introduce you to Sherpa Harsha. A history honours student and a lover of hidden haunts who can fascinate you, with her storytelling! (Yes, The sceptic. We are talking about you too.)
She puts the genie into the bottle for you, and she is not afraid to set it free sometimes. She takes you through a journey into the legends and the mysteries hidden in those corners of Firoz Shah Kotla , Minar-e-Zarrin and the Jami Masjid on her “A Date with the Djinns” tour. Warped in interesting fables about Djinns, Firoz Shah Kotla invites many a believers who write letters to Djinns, every Thursday asking for their wishes to be granted.
“Every Thursday people come here with letters and their photocopies. These letters are the only means of communication with the Djinns.” Says the Sherpa.
A letter written to Laat waley baba
Letters, we get. But why Xerox copies, you ask?
So, everyone is equal for the Djinn. People come with all their difficulties and problems, write them down and photocopy them so that the issue can be undertaken by the genie whose jurisdiction it falls in. Sherpa Harsha tells you this one, and many other stories that have become a part of the area’s identity and have come to represent the long-existing culture.
This ardent history student’s love for the ancient and mystical, led her to create a combination of the historical Nizamuddin’s Dargah and Humayun’s tomb in her “Historical Fusion at Humayun’s Tomb and Nizamuddin Dargah!” tour!
She starts with the Chausath Khamba, speaking then of the Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. If you run into a peacock on the tour, don’t be surprised because Harsha will soon weave a beautiful narrative of the real tale behind it! In the Urs Mahal, right opposite to Chausath Khamba, Qawalli procession happen on special days. A certain song from Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar was performed here. When you go inside, you will realise which one we are talking about! She will also tell you the interesting “Story of Surma” before she takes you into the scented lanes for some traditional “ittar”(perfume) shopping.
Walk few more steps with her towards the “miraculous baoli” and the local bazaars. Listen to the stories of the miracle man who cursed the entire Tuglaquabad fort, the Dhai din ka badshah and many more, with Sherpa Harsha!
Prepare to be spooked on the amazing ‘Date with the Djinns’ tour and the mystical ‘Historical fusion with Humayun’s tomb and Nizammudin Dargah’ tour with our extremely zealous Sherpa Harsha. Take the tours and go tell you friends about it too. Tell what you will and the ones you will. Tell them, that there is something loose in the city which feeds off wishes. But do it quickly, while you still have a soul.
